In a world of design overkill, quiet thought provoking design is always refreshing. Recently I was inspired by the work of London based product designer Oscar Diaz, whose work I was introduced to at a Protein Forum event in London, where speakers discussed their science-led approach to design. Oscar discussed his ink calendar project, ‘Self Printed’ developed in 2007 for an exhibition entitled ‘Gradual.’ The calendar slowly fills in the days by itself to not only mark each day of the month but also to indicate the passing of time as it happens.
Oscar experimented with various papers of different weight and textures and inks, until he found the correct combination that would absorb over the course of a day. He also carefully chose the colours based on a colour-temperature scale called ‘D65, which corresponds roughly to a midday sun in Western / Northern Europe. This spectrum also considers our perception of the weather for that month, ranging from dark blue in December, various shades of green that evoke the months of Spring, to warmer shades of red and oranges in the summer.

More recently Oscar has turned his mind to the design of cutlery, in his ‘Found’ series, whereby he developed super-light cutlery from existing shapes that he found in everyday objects such a plastic drinks bottles. His idea was that seeing as there are so many shapes already available in designed products, why not re-use the ones that already exist instead of creating more? This also allows the potential for small batch production without the need for moulds, and results in each set being entirely unique as they are hand cut.
After researching the shapes at the supermarket, Oscar cut the shapes out and then finished by coating with copper and then tin-plating for a metallic finish. Found was developed for Airmail exhibition in London earlier this year, I look forward to seeing what Oscar will develop for his next project.

Skin’s Selling Jesus in my gold and silver foil knitted top……..she’s a LEGEND!
The train from London Bridge to New Cross sweeps through a few neighbourhoods, over top recycling plants, and past council blocks, but one compound which it only narrowly misses has always intrigued me. On one side of the building I could see stacks boxes and files filling every window, worn and yellow. From the other side of the building though I could see activity, a grizzled man-boy smoking a butt out the window, or some shit-hot hipsters clambering on to roof. Once or twice I swear I heard music. This past sunday, I learnt that this complex was the biscuit factory, and within the sprawling blocks named Almond and Pecan lay The Music Bank which the posters allege is a collection of shit-hot rehearsal studios.
I was at the biscuit factory (no relation to the chateau de gateau) with Craig Lawrence, as per usual, and Fred Butler as they finished pieces for Skin, the infamous front of Skunk Anansie. The band was running through their final rehearsal before the tour launched the next day, which will hit London in a matter of hours. As a suburban (sorry) from the other side of the Atlantic (apologies again), I won’t feign to have known their first incarnation well, but when they started playing the raw force of their music combined with something that I can only call the athleticism, rather than cynicism, of iconic punk/britrock/heavy-fucking-alt-rock from another era. Yes, I was drawn in. Yes I had began to pine for beer and a crowd to thrash about in. After they tested the flammability of Craig’s knitted griffin-like metallic bolero – Belgium apparently is a land of health and safety where these things matter – Britain is less so – I went to relieve myself of their beer I had wished for. As I struggled with the doors of the cargo lift, I caught site of a hand drawn poster from 1997, the Bizarre Fest in Cologne, Skunk Anansie headlining with Faith No More. Then I understood. Angel Dust was one of my first cassettes, I could place Skunk Anansie now, if only by proxy, and understood just what this comeback meant, what it would be worth for all the people who hadn’t known them but will get that chance now. I’m on my way to the London gig at Electric Ballroom in Camden now. I can’t fucking wait.

Post Paris I’m wishing I was back there already to witness some of the new exhibition/installation/experimental opera by artist Terence Koh, who often works under the alias, ‘asianpunkboy’ and whose work embraces new gothic art, as well as the bizarre, one lucky collector once paid $500,000.00 for a gold plated feces of the artist.
The Chinese/Canadian artist usually lives in New York, but have jumped ship to Paris to immerse himself in the city’s architecture, atmosphere and sensuality and to prepare for his latest exhibition Adansonias at the Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, which takes place as an imaginary opera in eight acts to be unveiled over the course of the show. Koh’s work often has sexual undertones, and mixes elements of subculture with art history and mythology.
This experimental and tragic opera will comprise of drawings, collages and photographs around the yet unperformed scenes of this unorthodox performance. Koh, who often works in monochrome has transformed the ground floor of the gallery into an all-white set; the stage for the opera, where he will take role as the main character, flanked by eight entirely white-clad performers. The story, that is loosely based on the tale of The Little Prince reference Samuel Beckett’s Waiting For Godot and the French New Wave, punctuated by experimental live music and singing, including a piece of music played by Koh, using only the white keys of the piano, in a reference to Anton Reicha, who used such methods of composition.

Illumination of astral bodies, suns and other stars, is always measured from behind the observing object. High budget films popularize physics notions such as “The God Particle,” but have the actors who play scientists or the novelist who simplify their thoughts ever sought to measure the light that will carry on after Michael Jackson’s death. If we are still recording light from the beginnings of the universe (Response: Thanks be to Hubble), then will his star ever fade.
Architect Sacha Leong, one half of the Post Office design duo, and artist Item Idem conceived the “satellite of gold” and worked with visualizer Justin Wilson of Oba Wilson to develop this entry to The Michael Jackson Monument Design Competition. I’ll not parse their words (below), but do implore the world that a ritualistic tethering of time, space, and pop is definitely needed.

A brief respite from the New Gen stand at LFW, Craig and I headed over to 180 Aldwych to test some of the Bistrotheque cocktails, our poison included Chambord, Vodka and Champagne, not a bad mix by all standards.
Don’t forget to come down to the screening tomorrow at Jeanettes shop for a cocktail or two a la Craig!
Jeanette’s shop is opening its doors this monday evening for a Bring-Your-Own (Drinks)-Party to present Craig’s SS10 knitwear collection with the ”Carousel” - a film collaboration from Jez Tozer & Katie Shillingford. They’ll also be a few of my photos from their shoot. Hope to see you there.
The Blue Peter Badge: Apparently these are quite coveted or at least well known but elusive. Coming from the other side, I assume this is something like finding Mr Snuffleupagus.

For every king or queen of what-have-you, for those crowned prematurely or even posthumously, there was always another who told of their coming, who baptized the era even if only through a common calling. Known for the deconstructed cubist sentinels he has left scattered across London, Eduardo Paolozzi moved between a surrealist foundation, Art Brut and what became known as the Independent Group, the precursor to American Pop Art.
A retrospective of his work, both artistic and fantastically journalistic, has opened on the upper floors of Raven Row Gallery. Be sure the peruse Paolozzi’s work for experimental magazine Ambit, begun in the end of the 1950s, but re-purposed for this exhibition.
I have unfortunately stolen this from my friends Max and Krister. Firstly, I was afraid I would never know the love of the Saurians if i did not. Secondly, I feared that you were being targeted by “fine vibrations” beings and if found with this warning you may pay dearly for it – in other words, someone who thought they were a speaking to angels from starships or other dimensions put this through your mailbox like a cosmic grenade of love. I’ve jumped on that cosmic grenade.
And now I await to be chipped and the promise of unfettered connectivity all those cyber-dissident movies from the 90s promised me.
“If you’re an asshole than at least have some personality, there is nothing worse than a boring asshole.” (stolen, in quotes)
I’m sure Old Town, Chicago, has more history than I or most other transient urbanites will give it credit for, but from a quiet in the Old Town Ale House, I found character than I’ve felt for cities in their entirety. Barstools carried the weight of what must have been decades of regular patronage. Old wood and older glances dismissed me as as i walked in. At least hundred other eyes surveyed the room- frames and canvasses filled every inch of wall space. Across the bar were portraits of Second City regulars, the Old Town wino’s, and even some scenes of seduction mixed juxtaposed with more domestic content. Behind the bar, however, hung iconic faces: senators, governors and city mayors, all capture amidst their own peculiar idiosyncrasies and famous indiscretions. Unable to mask my interest, Lulu who runs the place poured me another whiskey and called Bruce Elliot, asking the painter to come meet us. With such wit in the paintings and a familiar hospitable air, I’ll definitely find that quiet corner for another tumbler soon.
Here’s an interview with Bruce that I gleaned from the Chicago Tribune and above and above one of my favourite as well two from his “Nude Governor Series”: Cavity Search Blagojevich and nude Gun-Totting Sarah Palin

This is as close as I’ll get to posting a photo of my voodoo dolls, something sacred, unlike potato chips. This was one of the oddest parting gifts I’ve received in a while, only possible from the city that give you po’boys and boucne rap. I’ll feed these to those I love (and hate) and see if i can control them. Maybe I need to stab pins in a potato after these things have been consumed. I don’t know. Apply scientific method here. Results to follow.
Let “Ya Boy, Choppa” (by Take Fo Superstars) play you out, cause coming soon we’ll have a CANTO RAP vs BOUNCE RAP showdown, smackdown, whatever, I just need time to check with my regional consultants on a few matters.
Half way through a screaming hang over, and after the largest of breakfasts (Bless Chicago and the size of their portions- What did Anna Wintour say about people from the mid-west, most of them can be best described as “little houses”), I stumbled down Division Street and into the studio-cum-shop of Renegade Handmade. Spawned to bring a level of permanence to the Renegade Crafts Fair, this little shop in Wicker Park has all the optimism of grassroots arts movements and witty cynic aesthetic that I had always associated with the run down glory of places like Montreal or Berlin.
Above is a picture of one of the Damned Dollies that stole my heart.
The Telegraph’s (pg 26) Hilary Alexander pays full page homage to NewGen designers in the lead up to Fashion Week. Craig’s pieces, hand knitted from barrier tape, have some how garnered the eco-friendly label. I love that confusion, I had always thought they screamed “Come on lads, these Ice-bergs won’t melt themselves.” The video and interview with Miss England Rachel Christie features accessories from Fred Butler in the open sequence and then moves on to Craig’s outfit.
Battle Royale between Miss World and London Fashion Week coming soon.
